Free Child Safety Seats and Booster Seats

What is the Child Safety Seat Program?

In partnership with the Virginia Department of Health (VDH), this program offers free child safety seats and booster seats for income-eligible children and families. Parents, foster parents, and legal guardians of children who reside in Virginia may apply. Safety restraint devices provided include a convertible safety seat (with a starting weight of 5 pounds) and a belt-positioning booster seat.

Who is Eligible for the Safety Seat Program?

  • Resident of Chesterfield County, Virginia (citizenship not required)
  • Custodial parent, legal guardian, or foster parent
  • Child is 7 years old or younger; pregnant mother must be in last trimester of pregnancy
  • Child must fit within the program’s devices (set by manufacturer’s guidelines)
  • Income eligible for WIC, Medicaid, SNAP, TANF, FAMIS, or LISSDEP income level guidelines
  • Parent or legal guardian is available to complete required training to learn how to correctly use and install a safety seat and booster seat
